Different Energy Sources

Diverse energy sources provide us with the power we require to live and work. Solar, wind, geothermal and biomass are among the sources. These sources aren’t only an important source of electricity, but also can be used to heat or transport. The major issue for these energy sources is that they can cause greenhouse gas emissions if they are burned to generate electricity. This leads to the need for more environmentally sustainable energy sources.

Fossil fuels are the most well-known form of energy. They include coal, oil and natural gas. They formed millions of years ago when prehistoric plants and animals died and were covered by layers of sedimentary rock. When the conditions were right these fossil fuels slowly transformed into carbon-rich materials that, when burned produce energy. These fossil fuels are non-renewable as they will run out within our lifetimes or in many lifetimes.

Renewable energy sources are continuously replenished. The primary renewable energy source is sunlight, which supplies heat and light. It is used to power our homes and businesses and to drive our cars. Wind is an energy source that is renewable and generates electricity by spinning turbines. We have been using it since people first began to harness the wind for millennia. In the end, we employ biochemical processes to create the ethanol (a clear alcohol that can be used as a fuel) from waste and crops.

As a result hydropower is the biggest renewable energy source in the United States, though wind and biofuels are expected become the dominant source in the near future. Hydropower is a natural cycle to harness water’s rapid flow, which is used to generate electricity.
